Inspiring Family Caregiving Story: Dan Jury & His Grandpa
Dan Jury was a young man in his early twenties when he made a life-changing decision that few people his age would choose. In 1974, instead of placing his elderly grandfather, Frank Tugend, into a nursing home, Dan brought him to live with him and took on the role of full-time caregiver.
Frank was very old, frail, and nearing the end of his life. He needed constant care, patience, and emotional support. Dan handled daily responsibilities like feeding, bathing, comforting, and simply being present. It was not an easy journey. Caring for an aging loved one required time, sacrifice, and maturity far beyond his years.
Dan did not do this for praise or attention. At the time, caregiving at home was uncommon, especially for someone so young. But Dan believed his grandfather deserved dignity, familiarity, and love during his final years.
Their quiet life together was later documented through intimate photographs taken by Dan and his brother, Mark Jury. These moments were published in the 1978 book Gramp, which offered a rare and honest look at aging, family bonds, and end-of-life care.
