Harvard Study Reveals: Greater Thigh Mass Linked to Better Insulin Sensitivity
Scientists have found that greater thigh circumference links to better metabolic health. Studies from Harvard University and the University of Copenhagen show people with stronger thighs have higher insulin sensitivity and better glucose control. Thigh muscles act as a major site for sugar uptake, which helps stabilize blood sugar and lowers type 2 diabetes risk.
Research also links thicker thighs to lower levels of chronic inflammation. A large population study published in the British Medical Journal found reduced heart disease and lower mortality among adults with more thigh muscle mass. Researchers believe thigh fat releases protective hormones and reduces harmful fat stored around organs. This makes thigh strength an important marker of long term health and longevity.

From Coffee Pots to Cockpits: The Incredible Journey of a Mother-Daughter Pilot Duo
She used to walk the aisle with a coffee pot. Now she walks into the cockpit in captain’s stripes, with her daughter right beside her. On July 23, 2022, Captain Holly Petitt and First Officer Keely Petitt pushed back Southwest Flight 3658 from Denver, Colorado, headed for St. Louis, Missouri. To most people on board, it felt like any other Saturday flight. But to Southwest, it was history: the airline’s first mother–daughter pilot duo in 55 years.
Holly’s story didn’t start in the captain’s seat. Right out of college she became a flight attendant at another airline, working days serving passengers. In between trips, while raising three kids, she squeezed in flying lessons whenever she could. Step by step, she built her hours, earned her licences and moved from cabin to cockpit. She has been flying as a pilot with Southwest for 18 years.
Meanwhile, Keely was growing up watching her mum chase that dream. At 14, a short “discovery flight” flipped a switch for her. From then on, every choice moved her closer to the sky: training, licences, and in 2017, an internship at Southwest. In May 2022, she joined the airline as a pilot.
Sometime over the Midwest, Holly picked up the PA and said, “I’d like to introduce your First Officer… and my daughter, Keely.” A shared dream, two careers, one historic cockpit.
